The breed was created by crossing a yellow retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel, and later other breeds were added, including the Irish Setter, Bloodhound, and more spaniels. Golden Retrievers were originally bred as hunting dogs, specifically for retrieving birds and other game from water.
